Spicy Chicken McNuggets and the fan-favorite Mighty Hot Sauce just made a nationwide comeback on Sept 1.
Both items, launched in 2020, have been absent from menus for a while now.
The nuggets last made their appearance on menus two years ago. The sauce, meanwhile, which McDonald’s called “the hottest dipping sauce it had ever sold,” has been missing since 2021.
While the rest of the country welcomed back the returning menu items, Texas customers received an additional, state-exclusive promotion: The ‘Texas Meal’, which is built around a 10-piece order of Spicy Chicken McNuggets or classic Chicken McNuggets, a medium order of fries, and a medium drink, all served in a custom, Texas-themed bag.
McDonald’s decided to extend state pride beyond just the packaging, however. The meal also includes one of seven collectible cups.
Designed by Texas artist Avery Orendorf, each cup represents one of the seven official cultural and tourism regions of the state, including Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Central Texas, West Texas, East Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth, and a combined Rio Grande Valley and South Texas design. Customers even get to pick which one they’d want to take home.
Such regional campaigns are not new to the fast food giant. They mirror long-standing traditions such as New England’s lobster roll and Hawaii’s Spam platter, or the wide variety of culture-specific offerings found abroad, such as India’s vegetable-forward menu or the unique prosperity burgers served in Indonesia.
By incorporating these state-specific exclusives alongside its familiar core menu, McDonald’s is able to keep its operational consistency while using regional novelty to foster a sense of community pride. It is a dual-track approach: the national menu provides the reliable, predictable foundation, while regional exclusives serve as the tactical tool used to keep customers excited and personally connected to their local restaurant.
