Hello Kitty is getting a Godzilla headpiece, and McDonald’s is putting her in a Happy Meal wearing it. The kaiju-themed toys roll out at participating US restaurants come August 18.
The burger giant announced the collaboration recently with a cinematic teaser it shared on the company’s social media channels. The clip mimics a disaster film featuring a Happy Meal box drifting across the ocean in a small boat before a massive Kaiju-sized Hello Kitty donning a Godzilla headpiece rises from the depths behind it.
Guillaume Huin, McDonald’s senior marketing director, described the upcoming toys as “one of the best collections of Happy Meal toys I’ve ever seen,” calling them “hall of fame collectibles in the making.” His August 10 post, which featured the teaser “Cute meets Kaiju,” also served as the date confirmation.
Following the initial spot, McDonald’s eventually revealed the entire lineup. The collection includes eight mashup figures pairing Sanrio characters with Toho monsters: Hello Kitty x Godzilla, Kuromi x Mechagodzilla, My Melody x Mothra, Keroppi x King Ghidorah, Pompompurin x Gigan, Badtz-Maru x Rodan, Chococat x SpaceGodzilla, and Cinnamoroll x Destoroyah.
Hello Kitty keeps showing up at McDonald’s. This Godzilla partnership, for instance, is just one of many recent high-profile crossovers for the fast-food giant.
In 2024, McDonald’s launched a global ‘Yu-Gi-Oh! x Hello Kitty and Friends’ collection featuring 10 mashup plushies. The brand returned the following summer, on August 12, 2025, with a 12-piece ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Hello Kitty and Friends’ set.
These collections have almost become a staple of McDonald’s contemporary marketing strategy. Pairing Sanrio’s iconic characters with major pop-culture franchises, after all, is bound to drive collector interest.
