Know Before You Eat: How to Check for Recalled Cucumbers

The cucumber recall initially announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on May 20 has now expanded to include a broader range of products, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The recall stems from concerns over Salmonella contamination in whole fresh cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. in Florida and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. The contaminated cucumbers have been linked to a multistate Salmonella outbreak.

Found Recalled Cucumbers? Here’s What to Do Next

As mentioned above, the CDC has confirmed 26 Salmonella infections across 15 states, resulting in nine hospitalizations. Affected states include CA, CO, KS, IL, OH, MI, PA, NY, KY, VA, NC, SC, AL, FL, and TN.

If any recalled cucumbers or cucumber-containing items are still in your refrigerator or pantry, do not eat them. Safely discard the products or return them to the retailer for a full refund. It’s also essential to thoroughly clean any kitchen surfaces, utensils, or containers that may have touched the recalled items using warm, soapy water.

If you’ve already eaten one of the affected products, be alert for signs of Salmonella infection, which usually appear six hours to six days after consumption. Symptoms to watch for include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, dehydration, and fevers exceeding 102°F. If any of these symptoms occur, consult your doctor promptly.

Although most people recover within a week, Salmonella poses higher risks for young children, seniors, and individuals with compromised immune systems. For further information and health guidance, visit the CDC’s official website.
