With summer in full swing, complete with backyard barbecues, family road trips, and fireworks lighting up the night, one major grocer is fully embracing the nostalgia.
Kroger is handing out 100,000 free pints of ice cream this summer. The chain has done this before, but this one is its largest one yet. The promotion builds on past efforts that, by Kroger’s account, had customers coming back.
There’s a sentimental pitch wrapped around it: “Summer is all about bringing people together to create memories that last a lifetime,” said Ann Reed, Group Vice President of Our Brands at Kroger, in a statement. “We’ve loved seeing customers come back year after year for their free pints and now, we’re going bigger than ever,” she added.
How to score your scoop
The coupons go up June 19 at noon Eastern, via a dedicated site, freekrogericecream.com, and the offer is limited to one pint per person while supplies last. With the way things have gone in the past years, they probably aren’t going to last very long.
Redeemable from June 19 through July 3, the digital coupon works at participating stores under the Kroger umbrella, such as Dillons and Pick ‘n Save, though it is not valid in California, Colorado, Louisiana, Tennessee, or Nevada, and excludes QFC locations.
It’s worth noting that the offer applies to any Kroger Brand ice cream pint, including classic flavors or the new All-American Collection, a festive red-white-and-blue range created for the Fourth of July.
Among them is the Banana Split Social, which tastes about how it sounds, a nostalgic take on the classic sundae featuring strawberry-banana ice cream with pineapple chunks and chocolate swirls running through. The limited-edition pints are already available in stores, free coupon or not.
And for anyone who manages to sleep through the giveaway, Kroger has left a side door open, a $1-off coupon that’s good on any two of its pints, also valid through July 3.”
