LEGO Super Mario is getting one of its biggest changes since the theme debuted in 2020. The LEGO Group has revealed eight new Super Mario sets, letting you build adventures around tiny versions of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, and other familiar Nintendo characters.
The new collection arrives January 1, 2027, at LEGO Stores and select retailers. Rather than focusing primarily on the interactive play system that helped launch LEGO Super Mario, the refreshed lineup puts minifigure roleplay at the center.
LEGO Super Mario Finally Gets Minifigures
Traditional minifigures may sound like an obvious fit for Super Mario, but LEGO has taken a different approach to the franchise until now. The original LEGO Super Mario sets launched in 2020 with larger interactive Mario figures and courses designed to recreate the feel of the video games.
This 2027 refresh, however, moves closer to the kind of play found in many other LEGO themes. Kids can place Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, and other characters into different scenes, vehicles, and environments and create their own stories.
Mario’s Pipe Jump Starts the Adventure
Mario’s Pipe Jump recreates one of the most recognizable moments from the games. Mario emerges from a familiar green pipe, and the set includes the new Mario minifigure.
There’s also a Goomba standing in his way. Kids can use a lever to catapult the enemy aside and help Mario grab a coin. The set is designed for ages 6 and up and serves as a simple entry point to the refreshed collection.
Mario Kart Gets Working Shell Launchers
Mario is also getting behind the wheel in Racing with Mario. The set includes a kart with a working launcher that fires shells as Mario races around cone and banana obstacles and tries to collect a coin.
The racing theme expands with Luigi & Bowser Jr.’s Race, which puts the two characters against each other in their own karts. Both can fire shells as they compete for a coin while avoiding obstacles. It’s also one of two new sets aimed at kids ages 4 and up, opening the LEGO Super Mario collection to younger builders.
Mario Is Taking a Beach Vacation
Not every set is about racing or battling Bowser. Mario’s Beach Adventures gives Mario some much-needed downtime after all those years spent rescuing the Mushroom Kingdom.
Mario comes dressed in swimming shorts and can relax on a sun lounge, grab food and drinks from a refreshment stand, or head toward the water. There’s even a table and an umbrella for his beach setup. But of course, things can’t stay peaceful forever, as a Sidestepper is nearby to cause trouble.
Mario and Yoshi Finally Have a House to Hang Out In
The second set made for ages 4 and up is Mario’s House, featuring Mario and Yoshi minifigures. The house includes several areas for the characters to explore, including a bedroom, kitchen, and garden.
There’s also a green slide connecting the floors, giving younger builders another way to play with the finished model. It’s a quieter slice of the Mario universe compared with the racing and battle sets, but that could make it especially appealing to kids who enjoy creating their own stories.
Bowser’s Rumbling Race Turns Up the Chaos
Bowser’s Rumbling Race takes the Mario Kart idea much further with several characters and vehicles packed into one set. It features Bowser riding in the Bowser Bruiser, while Toad gets a Zoom Buggy and Goomba drives a Biddybuggy. There’s even a brick-built Cow riding the Tune Thumper.
The vehicles aren’t just for display. Racing features include shell launchers that can also fire balls and vehicles with flames shooting from the back, giving kids plenty of ways to recreate the chaos of a Mario Kart race.
Bowser’s Castle Sets Up a Classic Rescue Mission
One of the biggest adventures in the collection comes from Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle. Here, Peach needs to escape Bowser’s fortress, which is defended by Bowser, Koopa Troopa, and Goomba.
The castle includes lava balls and hidden traps, while Fire Mario can search for a secret treasure chest filled with coins. It brings together several of the most recognizable parts of the Super Mario games in one set, complete with the classic Mario-versus-Bowser matchup.
Fire Luigi Gets His Own Battle
Rounding out the eight-set collection is Fire Luigi vs. Koopa Troopa Battle, which introduces a Fire Luigi minifigure. Luigi needs to reclaim a tower that Koopa Troopa has taken over.
You can load him into a cannon and launch him toward the tower, while “? blocks” hide surprises, including a Fire Flower. It’s another example of how LEGO is mixing recognizable game mechanics with the more traditional minifigure-based play of the refreshed collection.
LEGO Super Mario Is Entering a New Era
LEGO and Nintendo have been working together on Super Mario sets since 2020, but the arrival of traditional minifigures marks a major shift for the theme. Instead of relying mainly on interactive characters and buildable courses, the new sets give fans familiar LEGO-scale versions of some of Nintendo’s biggest characters.
