With just two emojis, IKEA and Xbox officially set the internet ablaze. The Swedish home giant dropped a wildly cryptic social media clip offering the briefest glimpse of a mystery crossover, leaving fans to piece together split-second flashes of gaming-inspired decor. But what are these two industry powerhouses actually building behind closed doors, and when will we get to see the real thing? Read on to discover the clues hidden in the teaser, how the internet reacted, and where this massive collaboration is set to make its full debut.

IKEA and Xbox leave fans guessing ahead of full reveal

IKEA and Xbox have managed to generate plenty of buzz without revealing much at all. The announcement itself was almost comically simple: a game controller emoji paired with a green heart.

IKEA shared the teaser on Instagram Tuesday, tagging Xbox as a collaborator and confirming that the two brands are working together on a new furniture project. That tiny announcement was enough to send fans into speculation mode, with the post collecting tens of thousands of likes within just a few hours.

What the teaser reveals

The short video appears to be intentionally cryptic. Rather than showing an entire piece of furniture or offering details about the collaboration, IKEA gives viewers a handful of fleeting visual clues

The clip begins with a close-up of what seems to be a thumbstick of an Xbox controller before a burst of white light moves across the frame. A bright green cushion resembling a gaming D-pad then appears, followed by IKEA and Xbox logos displayed together.

And then it ends.

There is no official collection name, pricing information, product lineup, or release date attached to the teaser. Even the exact types of furniture being developed remain unclear.

IKEA has only confirmed that its designers worked alongside Xbox on the project, leaving fans to scrutinize the brief footage for hints about what might eventually hit stores.

Fans quickly turn the mystery into a joke

With IKEA offering so few answers, the comment section naturally became the place for speculation — and jokes.

One fan immediately asked, “Do we have to assemble it?” IKEA responded with a shrug emoji, seemingly embracing the obvious reference to its famously DIY furniture experience.

Another commenter wondered whether the mystery collection would come with a side of IKEA’s signature meatballs. One of the most-liked comments summed up the absurdity of the situation in four words: “so we’re teasing furniture.”

Xbox also joined the conversation, commenting “Hej,” the Swedish greeting that felt particularly appropriate coming from Microsoft’s gaming brand on an IKEA post.

The playful exchange even attracted attention from other major brand accounts, with Fanta and Axe among those joining the comments. What began as a deliberately vague announcement quickly became a small social media event of its own.

This isn’t IKEA’s first quest into gaming

While an IKEA-Xbox collaboration may sound unexpected, the furniture giant has been courting gamers for years.

IKEA entered the gaming space in 2021 through a collaboration with Republic of Gamers, the PC hardware brand. The company later expanded its gaming-focused offerings with BRÄNNBOLL, a 20-piece collection introduced in September 2024.

That line was designed around the realities of gaming at home, including a foldable gaming table capable of concealing a PC tower when it is not being used. IKEA’s gaming catalog has also included pieces such as the bright green PS 2026 chair and a pull-out desk designed with gamers in smaller living spaces in mind.

That history makes the Xbox partnership feel less like a random experiment and more like a natural next step in IKEA’s effort to make gaming furniture part of the everyday home.

The grand unboxing at Gamescom

The wait for answers is nearly over. The collaboration is set to make its full debut during Gamescom, which runs August 26 through 30 at Koelnmesse in Cologne.

Xbox will have a major presence at the event, with its setup in Hall 7 featuring 25 games and 140 gaming stations. Visitors are expected to get hands-on time with titles including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Fable, and Gears of War: E-Day.

The timing also comes during a significant period for Xbox. The brand is preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary on Nov. 15, with a translucent green Series X25 Limited Edition console planned for release in select markets around that time.

For now, though, the biggest Xbox mystery may have nothing to do with a console or a game. IKEA has shown just enough to get everyone guessing — and fans will have to wait until Gamescom to find out whether the finished furniture lives up to the hype.
