Today, January 31, 2024, marks the 25th anniversary of Family Guy. Despite being on air for two and a half decade, the show isn’t ending anytime soon.

In an interview with The Wrap in January 2024, series creator Seth MacFarlane said that Family Guy is here to stay. “It’s still surviving and thriving,” MacFarlane said of the animated series. “It still has a sizable audience and is a perfect example of there being an appetite for something. So we continue to feed the beast. There’s no indication that the show is going to end anytime soon.”

When asked why he thinks Family Guy is still ongoing, MacFarlane likened it to the Jackie Gleason sitcom The Honeymooners.

“I would never ever compare these two shows… But I always loved the answer that Jackie Gleason gave when he was asked about how that show endured with only 39 episodes. And he just said, ‘Because they were funny.’ I don’t know that our answer would be any different,” MacFarlane said.

MacFarlane continued: “I think the goal of the show is just to make people laugh… It delves into social allegory and politics now and then without question, as a good primetime animated show should, but that’s always secondary. It’s a room full of comedy writers who just want to f—g laugh… That’s the mission statement of the show and it doesn’t ever really try to position itself with any pomposity as anything more than that, which I think in this instance is probably a good thing.”

After Family Guy’s ongoing season 22, the show is confirmed to return for a 23rd season, but has yet to be renewed for a 24th season.

Has Family Guy been canceled before?

Believe it or not, Family Guy has been canceled twice before. The first cancellation happened in 2000, with Fox canceling it after two seasons because of low ratings and advertisers’ resistance due to the show’s controversial humor. Despite that cancellation, a third season was produced and released.  After that, the series was canceled for the second time at the end of the 2001–2002 season. Fortunately, reruns on Cartoon Network’s block Adult Swim drove up interest, and a letter-writing campaign, along with impressive DVD sales, encouraged Fox to bring the show back for the 2005–2006 television season.

What is Family Guy about?

The Griffins in Family Guy
The Griffins in Family Guy

Family Guy revolves around the dysfunctional Griffin family, consisting of:

  • Peter Griffin (Seth MacFarlane): The bumbling, clueless, and often inappropriate patriarch.
  • Lois Griffin (Alex Borstein): The patient and intelligent voice of reason, often exasperated by Peter’s antics.
  • Meg Griffin (Mila Kunis): The awkward and often-bullied teenage daughter.
  • Chris Griffin (Seth Green): The overweight, uncoordinated, and socially awkward teenage son.
  • Stewie Griffin (Seth MacFarlane): The diabolical baby genius with aspirations of world domination.
  • Brian (Patrick Warburton): The talking family dog, serving as Peter’s best friend and Stewie’s reluctant accomplice.

The show is set in the fictional town of Quahog, Rhode Island, and its humor is known for being:

  • Surreal and outrageous: From cutaway gags lampooning pop culture to absurd scenarios, the show doesn’t shy away from pushing boundaries.
  • Satirical and politically incorrect: It often parodies current events, celebrities, and social norms, often generating controversy.
  • Character-driven: Despite the craziness, the characters have unique personalities and surprising moments of depth.

While the core focus is on the Griffin family, the show also features a wide cast of supporting characters, from neighbors and friends to pop culture parodies and historical figures.
