That old Windows laptop you’ve been holding onto is about to hit a hard stop. Millions of PCs are nearing the point where they’ll stop getting security updates and not all of them can upgrade to Windows 11.
Now, Google is stepping in with a free alternative that basically turns your aging machine into something new.
Google is asking you to repurpose your laptops
A huge number of Windows 10 machines don’t meet the requirements for Windows 11. That means no upgrade path and eventually, no security updates either.
And once those updates stop, your device becomes a much easier target for attacks.
Microsoft’s solution is to buy a new PC. But that isn[‘t exactly realistic for everyone.
Instead of replacing your laptop, Google is giving you an option to just change what is running on it.
The company is offering ChromeOS Flex, a lightweight operating system that can be installed on older PCs. It is designed to run faster on aging software, block risky apps and executables, and add built-in security features like sandboxing. It also reduces the risk of data loss.
Basically, it turns your old Windows laptop into something like a Chromebook.
The catch? You can’t just flip a switch. While the concept of a pre-made “install kit” sounds great, the reality is a bit more hands-on. You’ll need to download the ChromeOS Flex software and create your own bootable USB drive. It’s a bit of a weekend project, but for a machine that would otherwise be a paperweight, it’s a small price to pay.
Your options are clear
If your PC cannot upgrade to Windows 11, you are left with a few paths. Buy a new computer (which Microsoft prefers), pay for extended Windows 10 support (which is a short-term fix), or switch to something like ChromeOS Flex or Linux.
What is not an option is doing nothing. Because once support ends, your device becomes a very easy target. With cyber threats increasing, that is definitely not what you want.
