Reading glasses might be the next thing to go the way of the flip phone.
The FDA just approved VIZZ, a once-daily eye drop that helps you see up close without glasses. That’s a big deal if you’re over 45, which, statistically speaking, means your eyes don’t focus like they used to. It’s called presbyopia, and it affects over 120 million Americans. Until now, your options were glasses, bifocals, or awkwardly zooming in on your phone.
VIZZ works differently than past attempts. There was another drop on the market named Vuity, but it came with trade-offs: dim vision, eye strain, and in rare cases, issues with the retina. VIZZ skips all that by targeting the pupils without messing with the rest of your eye. What you get is a sharper close-up vision for up to 10 hours, with no major side effects reported.
The drop was tested across 30,000+ treatment days with no serious complications. It uses an ingredient called aceclidine (instead of the harsher stuff in Vuity), and it’s headed to pharmacies later this year.
If it works as promised, this might be the first eye drop that actually earns a spot in your medicine cabinet next to the Tylenol. Not because your eyes are red, but because you’re tired of holding the menu two feet away.
