For years, the quest for the biggest possible coffee or iced beverage has driven customers to request the largest size on the menu, but Dunkin’ may have just set a new, almost unprecedented benchmark.

The coffee-and-doughnut chain is now testing a massive new size that makes its usual extra-large look puny, taking the concept of “oversized” to a whole new level. A handful of locations are selling 48-ounce “bucket” drinks, which are double the chain’s previous largest size, a 24-ounce extra large, and Massachusetts is one of the first states to get the trial.

The bucket drinks come in a 48 oz container with a special lid and straw, according to signage spotted in stores. The signs list a Refresher option for $9.49, along with two coffee options that start at $8.89.

Where to Find the Behemoth Beverage

The test isn’t chainwide. Local reports confirm that the bucket drinks were available at 175 University Drive in Amherst. Posts on social media from fans and food content creators have claimed additional locations are selling them too, including in Falmouth, New Bedford, and Lee, New Hampshire.

The move lands after a viral TikTok trend last summer that had people drinking coffee out of literal buckets, with lines forming at local coffee shops in Massachusetts.

Dunkin’ has used Massachusetts as a test market before, thanks in part to the state’s high concentration of stores and the chain’s New England roots. Headquartered in Canton, MA, the company often trials innovations here to gauge real-world response from its core customers before wider rollout.

The coffee chain has trialed items such as a blueberry cobbler coffee flavor (a seasonal dessert-inspired brew) and ElectroBrew (a coconut water-infused cold brew aimed at a hydrating, energizing twist) in the state and tested drinks including Popping Bubble Iced Tea, Sparkling Dunkin’ Refreshers, Summer Shandies, and Bubble Iced Coffee in 2020.
