McDonald’s Canada is giving away a miniature quarter-pounder collectible cast from a quarter pound of 10-karat gold as part of its Monopoly Golden Edition promotion, which launched on September 29.

The prize has an estimated retail value of C$20,000, per promotional details. The company’s official site also confirms that the collectible comes with an appraisal.

How the contest works

Unlike the traditional McDonald’s Monopoly game, which requires players to collect a full set of color-coded property pieces to win major prizes, the gold burger is awarded through a Golden Prize Draw.

To get an entry, customers must peel the game stamps from their packaging and punch the 14-digit codes into the McDonald’s app for a Bonus Play, the burger giant’s in-app game for physical stamp codes. The game is open to players 14 and up, though younger children can play through a parent or guardian.

Claiming a non-food prize generally requires the age of majority, 18 or 19, depending on where they live, or a parent or guardian to claim on a minor’s behalf. Winners also have to answer a skill-testing question correctly.

The draw entry isn’t assigned automatically, however. There are 11 separate draws, all scheduled for December 10, and players must choose which one to enter by November 23, or their entry is forfeited.

Game pieces come in specially marked packaging through November 2, or until supplies run out, with all codes requiring entry in the app by November 23.

While the contest is limited to Canadian residents, fans in the U.S. can look forward to their own version of Monopoly, which returns on October 6 with a $1 million top prize. And because these are managed as separate promotional games with independent prize pools, rewards and gameplay mechanics differ significantly between the two countries.
