Wendy’s is bringing back its iconic yellow packaging that nostalgic fans have never stopped asking for.
The fast food chain will soon serve burgers, nuggets, fries, and Frostys in its original yellow cups and boxes nationwide for a limited time.
“Fans asked. Constantly,” said Tariq Hassan, Wendy’s Chief Marketing and Customer Growth Officer, in a statement to USA Today. “It’s one of the most requested things we’ve ever had come back.”
Wendy’s has used yellow packaging since opening its first location in Columbus, Ohio, in November 1969. The chain later shifted to red and white containers with its logo.
The rollout begins September 28, 2026, and continues into 2027.
Online, the announcement drew an immediate mix of visual nostalgia and daily restaurant realities.
“My childhood!” one Reddit user wrote. “I hope this change becomes permanent, similar to what Burger King & Pizza Hut did by ‘temporarily’ bringing back their old logos only for them to be brought back permanently.”
Others argued that visual nostalgia is meaningless without addressing long-standing complaints about food preparation and drive-thru delays. “Packaging means nothing if they don’t bring back the old recipes,” another Redditor noted, pointing to changes in pickle recipes and venting about having to “wait fifteen minutes in … line.”
The packaging news comes as Wendy’s works through a broader turnaround. The company closed 28 restaurants in the last quarter of 2025 as part of a plan to shut 5% to 6% of its locations nationwide, announced by then-interim CEO Ken Cook in November. It has since opened 44 U.S. restaurants in the first half of 2026.
As of early August, Wendy’s operated more than 7,000 restaurants worldwide.
“Today we are clearly not performing at our potential,” President and CEO Bob Wright said in an August earnings update, pointing to menu quality and operational execution as areas the company is targeting for improvement.
