Disney+ has officially scrapped its live-action Power Rangers series, ending a development cycle that began in March 2025.
The project, which was set to be produced with Hasbro Entertainment and 20th Television, had tapped Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023-Present) showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, who signed on as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.
Ultimately, things didn’t pan out due to financial concerns.
A source told Deadline the problem was structural rather than creative. Mounting a series of this caliber proved difficult for Disney, as the studio would be footing the bill for a high-budget live-action series owned entirely by Hasbro while walking away with nothing to keep.
Netflix ran into the same wall first, spending more than two years developing its own live-action reboot before pulling out in 2024, which is how the property ended up at Disney+ to begin with.
The view from the fanbase
The news of the cancellation sparked a polarized debate across social media, with fans on X (formerly Twitter) expressing a mix of relief, resignation, and frustration.
Some viewed it as a victory for the franchise’s integrity, with the sentiment succinctly captured by one particular comment: “One less IP to be ruined by Disney, for now.”
Others adopted a more pessimistic outlook regarding the long-term viability of the property. “I think we have to accept as fans that Power Rangers is a dead franchise. No different from Bakugan or Speed Racer. Sure we’ll see crossovers, references, and a movie or two in the future. But this basically marks the end of the line for power rangers as we know it,” one user argued.
Comparisons to the franchise’s Japanese roots were also frequent, with a fan noting, “Meanwhile, Super Sentai has been getting better treatment, even recent series pushing past boundaries to create unique series. (Even though, it ended for new experimental shows to come in. The next series after Gavan will be Kaiju-based).”
The franchise’s last live-action series was Power Rangers Dino Fury (2021-2022), which landed on Netflix in 2021 and was later rebranded as Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury for its third and final season in 2023.
The franchise has also had three theatrical films to its name, with 20th Century Fox debuting the first two, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997). Lionsgate released the third in 2017 in the form of a reboot.
Additionally, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always arrived on Netflix on April 19, 2023, timed to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
