McDonald’s is taking its famous French fries beyond the drive-thru and into the world of fashion with a backpack unlike anything fans have seen before. Designed with dedicated compartments for carrying the brand’s iconic fries, the unusual accessory blends convenience, creativity, and a love for fast-food culture into one eye-catching package. But what inspired McDonald’s to create a bag built around its most recognizable menu item — and how does it actually work? Here’s a closer look at the fry-filled design that has people talking.

From viral fan craft to streetwear statement

What started as a creative passion project on social media has officially crossed over into real-world street style. McDonald’s new Big Fries Backpack was born from the mind of craft blogger Daomeidan, a longtime brand enthusiast known for the Meal Logs series — a digital project dedicated to transforming everyday McDonald’s packaging into handcrafted art.

After years of documenting custom accessories and engaging with the community at fan conventions, the blogger’s dream took a major leap forward during the 2026 McDonald’s Fan Conference. Through a new co-creation initiative designed to turn community ideas into official merchandise, McDonald’s China partnered with the creator to bring the concept to store shelves.

Reflecting on the milestone collaboration, Daomeidan shared that the design grew out of a desire to reinterpret iconic fast-food elements through hands-on craftsmanship.

“The inspiration for the giant fries bag came from my Meal Logs series,” the maker shares. “This time, we used the theme of Big Fries Day to turn the giant fries box, takeaway bag, and receipt into a new story. Throughout the process, I felt that fans’ passion was truly seen by the brand and seriously responded to.”

Designed for the ultimate on-the-go snacker

Every inch of the knapsack pays homage to the takeaway experience, blending bold fashion with functional, snack-friendly utility. Crafted to mimic the exact silhouette of the chain’s brown paper delivery bags, the backpack features giant Golden Arches wrapping seamlessly around the front panel.

The design excels through its quirky, hands-free features:

  • Dedicated Fry Pockets: Built-in side compartments shaped like McDonald’s fries cartons keep your favorite side upright and accessible for on-the-move snacking.
  • Ketchup Packet Holder: A built-in slot keeps your sauce packets secure, organized, and ready for dipping at a moment’s notice.
  • Playful Details: A giant receipt tag dangles from the side, completing the grand takeaway illusion.

A midsummer ritual rooted in wordplay

The viral bag was officially unveiled as the flagship drop for the twelfth annual Big Fries Day, a beloved seasonal campaign built on clever linguistic humor. The release aligns with Dashu (大暑)—the traditional Chinese solar term for “Great Heat” — which happens to sound identical to Dashu (大薯), the phrase for “large fries.”

Since pioneering the pun in 2015, McDonald’s China has used the summer heatwave to anchor a month of festivities filled with menu discounts, in-store events, and collectible drops. Over the past decade, the clever wordplay has evolved into a genuine cultural phenomenon, turning the act of eating large fries during the hottest days of the year into a cherished summer tradition for millions of fans.

Available exclusively through the McDonald’s App and the McDonald’s Mall mini-program in China, this year’s limited-edition backpack stands as the ultimate tribute to both midsummer cravings and fan-led innovation.

Will McDonald’s bring the Big Fries Backpack to the U.S.?

As of now, there is no official announcement that McDonald’s Big Fries Backpack will be released in the United States. However, McDonald’s has previously released branded merchandise and fan-focused products in different markets, including the U.S., so a future international release cannot be ruled out. For now, American fans who want the fry-themed backpack would likely have to look for limited resale opportunities rather than an official U.S. launch.
