The upcoming film from directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley is shaping up to be a major departure from previous installments, with an entirely new cast, a fresh storyline, and a timeline that could push the boundaries of the universe’s future. A proven duo takes the helm
The next Star Trek movie is officially charting a different course, with filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley preparing to take the iconic sci-fi franchise in a direction unlike anything audiences have seen before.
News first broke in November that Goldstein and Daley had been tapped to write, produce, and direct the upcoming installment. The duo brings experience from several successful projects, including the critically praised 2018 comedy Game Night and the 2023 fantasy adventure Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. They also contributed to the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker.
From the beginning, the new movie was described as a major departure from the franchise’s established history. Rather than continuing existing storylines or revisiting familiar characters, the project was announced as a “completely new take in the Star Trek universe and is not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects.”
Teasing a clean slate at Comic-Con
During an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldstein and Daley offered a brief but exciting update on their progress, hinting that the upcoming film will introduce a new chapter for Star Trek.
While Daley kept details under wraps, he revealed that the project is moving forward and could surprise longtime fans.
“[It’s] in progress, and we’re very excited about it. I think people will be surprised. I really can’t say anything other than that.”
Goldstein provided more insight into the film’s direction, confirming that audiences should not expect a return of previous movie crews or characters. Instead, the filmmakers are focused on creating a different experience within the vast Star Trek universe.
“I think we’ve said in the past…it won’t be the characters that you’ve seen previously in your Star Trek movies. So there will be a new take on that. And I think it’ll probably be a little further into the future than we’ve been before. What draws us to it is the opportunity to do a different spin.”
Where will the new movie fit in the timeline?
The biggest mystery surrounding the upcoming film is exactly when it will take place. The Star Trek timeline has already explored multiple eras, from the late 24th century period featuring The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Picard, to the far-future setting of Discovery and Starfleet Academy, which take place in the 32nd century.
One possibility is that the new movie could be set sometime after the events of Picard but before the devastating event known as The Burn, which occurred in 3069 and reshaped the galaxy in the Discovery storyline.
However, with the filmmakers promising a completely new approach, the movie could also introduce an entirely unexplored period in Star Trek history.
The dawn of a new era
This cinematic pivot comes at a crucial turning point for the franchise. The final live-action television series currently in production — Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — are both set to conclude their runs by 2027, with their final seasons already wrapped.
With no other small-screen projects announced to follow and the last theatrical release dating all the way back to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, Goldstein and Daley aren’t just making a movie — they’re handing Star Trek a fresh canvas to define the next generation of sci-fi cinema.
