Nintendo is raising the price of its Switch 2 console, marking a major shift for the gaming company as rising hardware costs continue to impact the industry. The price increase comes less than two years after the console’s launch and follows growing pressure from component shortages and rising production costs.

Starting September 1 in the U.S., the Switch 2 will increase from $449.99 to $499.99, with similar price hikes also rolling out in Canada, Europe, and Japan.

Switch 2 Price Increase Arrives Globally

The new pricing affects multiple regions, signaling a broader adjustment rather than a market-specific change. In Japan, the Switch 2 price is increasing from 49,980 yen to 59,980 yen, while customers in North America and Europe will also see higher retail prices in the coming months.

A major factor behind the increase appears to be the rising cost of hardware components, especially memory chips. The gaming industry has been facing supply constraints tied to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure and data centers, which has increased demand for advanced memory technology.

As a result, console makers are facing higher manufacturing costs across the board. Nintendo now joins other gaming brands, such as Sony, that have recently adjusted hardware pricing in response to those pressures.

Nintendo Expects Lower Console Sales

Alongside the price increase, Nintendo also lowered its sales outlook for the Switch 2. The company expects to sell fewer consoles in its current fiscal year than in the previous one.

This is a notable shift given that console sales often grow during the early years of a platform’s lifecycle. The forecast suggests Nintendo is preparing for a more challenging hardware market as rising prices could affect consumer demand.

Big Games Still Driving Interest

Despite the higher console price, Nintendo continues to rely on its major franchises to sustain Switch 2’s momentum. The company still has several high-profile releases planned across franchises such as Pokémon, Splatoon, and Star Fox. Also, the Switch 2 library continues to expand, with newer titles that have already drawn strong player attention.

Nintendo is also seeing continued success outside gaming through its movie and entertainment partnerships. All of these are helping to keep its core brands visible even as the hardware business faces pressure.

A Tougher Market for Gaming Hardware

The Switch 2 price increase reflects a larger trend happening across the gaming industry, where rising production costs are making premium consoles more expensive to manufacture and sell. For players considering a Switch 2 purchase, the current pricing window may be the last opportunity to buy the console before the higher retail price takes effect later this year.
