For some time now, the narrative surrounding retail has been dominated by the “digital-first” shift, leaving many to wonder if the era of the massive, sprawling brick-and-mortar store was finally winding down. However, Walmart is making a multi-billion-dollar bet that customers still want a premium experience when they walk through the front doors.

The world’s largest retailer recently announced that more than 650 stores are getting remodeled in 2026. Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets alike.

Although no full national list has been released, Arkansas has confirmed its locations: Bentonville, Marion, Nashville, Osceola, Paragould (both the Neighborhood Market and Supercenter), Springdale, and Wynne. About 20 other states have partial lists available.

Beyond the paint job

The renovations look different depending on the store. Supercenters are getting updated layouts, wider aisles, refreshed interiors, and upgraded Pharmacy and Vision Center spaces with private consultation rooms. Neighborhood Markets are focused more on food, with expanded deli sections, hot bars, better lighting, and improved areas for online grocery fulfillment.

Some smaller locations are being turned around in about four weeks. Walmart has been referring to these as “rapid remodels,” a faster approach compared to the few months a typical renovation takes.

Beyond the remodels, Walmart plans to open approximately 20 new stores between now and early 2027. Four (or more) have already come online earlier this year in California and Florida. Confirmed upcoming projects include a new Supercenter in Celina, Texas, and an expansion of the existing Supercenter in Tucson, Arizona. Details on the remaining locations haven’t been shared yet.

The retail chain has framed the whole push as a continued “significant investment” in its brick-and-mortar footprint. The company has been spending heavily on e-commerce for years, but 650-plus renovations in a single year show that physical stores are still very much part of the plan.
