Popeyes recently launched a limited-time One Piece menu, tying into one of the most popular anime franchises in the world.

Four items are part of the new menu: the Luffy Bento Box, the Gum-Gum Fruit Lemonade, Chopper’s Cupcake, and a bundle that puts all three together.

What’s in the box

The Luffy Bento Box is priced at $7.99 and includes two pieces of Popeyes Signature Chicken with mac and cheese.

The Gum-Gum Fruit Lemonade, which will set you back by $3.49, is named after the Devil Fruit that gives Captain Monkey D. Luffy his stretching abilities.

Chopper’s Cupcake, which costs $3.99, is topped with pink frosting and is named after the Straw Hat crew’s doctor. The full Luffy Bento Bundle, which includes everything, is available for $13.99.

Beyond the menu

On the first day of the launch, customers who bought the bundle at select locations received a free collectible bento box. It was more of a limited quantity, first-come, first-served kind of thing, and they sold out quickly at busy spots.

Participating spots included locations in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami Beach, and New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Popeyes is also dropping exclusive merch on April 15, including keychains, t-shirts, and bento boxes available at shop.popeyes.com.

The franchise itself dates back to 1997. Eiichiro Oda created it as a manga, and it has since spawned an anime series, a Netflix live-action adaptation, and multiple films.

In March, Crunchyroll announced the comic had surpassed 600 million copies sold, making it the best-selling comic book of all time, ahead of Superman. It’s worth noting that Oda is the only Japanese author in the top 10 best-selling authors globally.

For a chicken chain collab, the timing isn’t random; it’s a response to a massive surge in popularity. One Piece currently holds more cultural reach than at almost any point in its nearly 30-year history.
