The days of uninterrupted binge-watching at your current rate are officially numbered as Amazon Prime Video rolls out a major shift to its subscription tiers. While the platform continues to expand its library of hit originals and live sports, a new cost for the ad-free experience means your monthly budget is about to take a hit. Whether you’re a long-time subscriber or just signed up, staying in the no-commercials zone will now require a specific additional fee. Read on to discover exactly how much extra you’ll be paying each month and the specific date these changes take effect so you aren’t caught off guard by your next billing statement.

Amazon rebrands ad-free tier to Prime Video Ultra

Starting April 10, 2026, the streaming landscape is shifting as Amazon rebrands its ad-free add-on to Prime Video Ultra. This change marks a transition from the previous $2.99 monthly surcharge to a new $4.99 per month price point. While the $2 increase reflects the rising cost of premium, uninterrupted content, Amazon is packing the “Ultra” tier with significant upgrades to satisfy even the most demanding viewers.

What’s changing with the move to Ultra?

This isn’t just a price hike; it’s a total overhaul of the premium experience. Here is how the new $4.99 Ultra plan compares to the previous $2.99 offering:

  • Expanded Streaming: You can now watch on five devices simultaneously, up from the previous limit of three.
  • Massive Offline Library: The download limit has been quadrupled, allowing for 100 titles to be saved on your devices rather than just 25.
  • The 4K Paywall: To maintain a competitive edge, 4K/UHD streaming is now an exclusive feature reserved specifically for Ultra subscribers.

Is there an annual discount available?

Amazon is introducing an annual Prime Video Ultra plan for $45.99/year. This offers a 23% savings compared to the monthly rate, which is a great way to offset the price hike if you plan to keep the service long-term.

What happens if you don’t upgrade?

If you choose not to pay for the Ultra tier, you will automatically move to the ad-supported version included with your Prime membership. While you’ll see commercials, your standard benefits are actually getting a slight boost:

  • Concurrent Streams: Increased from 3 to 4.
  • Downloads: Increased from 25 to 50.
  • New Feature: You will now have access to Dolby Vision at no extra cost.

There is no change in cost to the base Amazon Prime membership, which remains $14.99 a month or $139 a year.

What can you watch on Prime?

Regardless of whether you upgrade to Prime Video Ultra, subscribers continue to receive an expansive library of premium entertainment and live events. Your membership maintains full access to Amazon MGM Studios originals, including fan-favorite series like Fallout, Reacher, The Boys, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. The lineup also features major motion pictures such as Heads of State, Red One, Road House, and The Accountant 2, alongside a massive catalog of licensed films and shows.

For sports fans, Prime Video remains a central hub for exclusive live coverage, including:

  • NFL & NBA
  • WNBA & NWSL
  • NASCAR
  • The Masters

The fine print

While Prime Video Ultra offers a significant boost in performance and convenience, there are a few key details to keep in mind:

  • U.S. Exclusive: At this time, the Prime Video Ultra tier is only available for customers in the United States.
  • The “Ad-Free” Exception: Even with an Ultra subscription, live TV, sporting events, and specific ad-supported channels may still include commercials.
  • Account Limits: Concurrent stream and download limits (5 streams/100 downloads) apply across all profiles on a single account. Please note that sub-limits may exist for specific titles, devices, or third-party providers.
  • Technical Requirements: 4K/UHD, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos features are available for select Prime movies and TV shows. Accessing these premium formats depends on your specific device capabilities and available internet bandwidth.
