85″ Hisense CanvasTV review: Bigger is better

Hisense’s massive 85-inch matte display proves you don’t need a Samsung budget to turn your living room into a world-class gallery

When I reviewed the 65-inch Hisense CanvasTV S7 Series last year, I called it the first real threat to Samsung’s The Frame. That’s because the Hisense CanvasTV offers a similarly beautiful matt aesthetic, but it ditched the annoying external box of The Frame, and did it all at a much lower price. But as much as I loved the 65-inch version, there’s always that “bigger is better” itch.

Enter the 85-inch Hisense CanvasTV (85S7N). Hisense expanded the CanvasTV lineup in 2025, and after living with this massive digital “canvas” on my wall for a few months, it’s clear that the extra screen real estate completely changes the vibe of a room.

The “Gallery” Scale

If the 65-inch model is the equivalent of a nice framed print, the 85-inch is practically a gallery style mural. At nearly 76 inches wide, this isn’t just a TV – it’s a showpiece. The standout feature still remains its stunning Hi-Matte display which displays both artwork and streaming content beautifully.

In my previous review, I raved about how it kills glare, and on an 85-inch scale, that matte finish is even more visually impressive. Usually, a screen this big acts like a giant black mirror when it’s off, reflecting every window and lamp in your living room. Here, it just looks like a massive, textured painting.

Unfortunately, the installation is still a two-person job. Actually, for the 85-inch, you might even need three people since it weighs over 100 lbs. It uses the same UltraSlim wall mount, and despite its size, it still sits remarkably flush to the wall. I still highly recommend hiring a professional for the installation.

Performance: Big Screen, Same Smart Guts

Under the hood, not much has changed from the smaller models, which is mostly a good thing. You’re still getting the same punchy and vibrant 4K QLED display, though it still struggles with deep blacks in a pitch-black room since it lacks local dimming.

There’s also the same 144Hz refresh rate which means it’s a great display for gamers to use too. And the Google TV OS is smooth and snappy, though I’m still holding out hope for a Roku version one day.

The audio performance actually sounds a bit “bigger” here. The built-in surround sound system seems to benefit from the larger chassis, effectively providing a slightly wider soundstage than the 65-inch. That said, serious audiophiles will still want to use a dedicated soundbar.

The Value Proposition

The 85-inch model debuted with a $3,999 MSRP, but we’ve already seen it being priced closer to $1900. When you compare that to the 85-inch Samsung’s The Frame TV, which often stays priced north of $3,000, the value is undeniable.

You still get the fabulous free art library (there’s no $5/month subscription like with Samsung) and the magnetic teak frame included in the box. Unfortunately, one minor gripe remains – the frame is still plastic. On a 65-inch TV, you notice it less. But on an 85-inch “statement piece,” I really wish Hisense offered a premium real-wood upgrade option.

Bottom Line

The 85-inch Hisense CanvasTV is for those who want their home to look like a curated gallery but still want to host the ultimate Super Bowl party. It keeps everything we loved about the smaller 65-inch model—the brilliant matte screen, the clean “no-external-box” set-up, and the very competitive pricing—and simply supersizes it.

If you have the wall space and want to skip the “Samsung tax,” the Hisense CanvasTV is the absolute best way to go big without ruining your home’s aesthetic.
