Date cancelled: April 2018
Created by showrunner Veena Sud and starring Regina King, Seven Seconds was cancelled by Netflix after one season. Based on the Russian film The Major, the Fox 21-produced crime drama explored race in America through a story involving the hit-and-run of an African-American teenager by a white Jersey City cop and the crime’s subsequent cover-up by the mostly white police force.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in February 2018, Fox 21 Television Studios president Bert Salke said his hope was for Seven Seconds to run for “four or five” seasons by bringing back old characters while introducing new faces in an anthology format, as the series would remain rooted in Jersey City. Apparently, that didn’t push through, as Netflix rebranded Seven Seconds as a limited series following its cancellation.
