Has Dexter: New Blood been canceled or renewed for season 2? 1

Dexter: New Blood, the sequel to the beloved Showtime series Dexter, wrapped its 10-episode run last Sunday. And while the finale delivered a definitive conclusion to Michael C. Hall’s titular character, some fans are wondering whether there would be a second season focusing on Dexter’s son, Harrison (Jack Alcott).

In the finale, titled Sins of the Father, Dexter’s twisted past is finally discovered by his girlfriend and town sheriff Angela (Julia Jones). Though Dexter plans to immediately leave town with Harrison, the latter doesn’t want to go and confronts his father about abandoning him for 10 years and embracing back his “Dark Passenger,” which is the burden that Dexter carries as a result of his childhood trauma.

Harrison, who has been gradually depicted as someone who shares the same killer instinct as his father, pulls a gun on Dexter and forces him to face the consequences of everything he has done. At the end of the episode, Dexter says sorry to his son, telling him to take the safety off the gun. Harrison ultimately shoots Dexter in the chest, killing him on the spot.

But that isn’t the only shocking twist in the finale. When Angela shows up on the scene, she doesn’t arrest Harrison and instead lets him leave. With the series ending with Harrison driving away from town into an unknown future, it seems that a second season of Dexter: New Blood is not entirely impossible.

While Showtime has yet to officially renew Dexter: New Blood for a second season, showrunner Clyde Phillips said that he’d be very happy to continue the series if the network really wants to do another season.

“Well, it is really Showtime’s call,” Phillips said of the potential Dexter: New Blood season 2 in a recent interview with Collider. “And speaking of calls, if they were to call me and say, ‘Look, this is a huge asset for Showtime.’ I think, and I underline the word think, I think Dexter is their number one asset. If they were to call me and say, ‘We want to do Harrison. Are you interested?’ Much like when they called me to say, ‘We want to reboot Dexter, and you’re the guy’ I would drop everything to do it.”

Phillips added that streaming numbers of Dexter: New Blood this January would probably be one of the factors that would determine whether Showtime would pick the series for another season.

“I mean, the show’s hugely successful for them this season,” said Phillips. “And we’re going to be getting some big numbers in January and all the people that are DVR-ing the show so they can binge it. We’re going to get a whole new set of numbers later this month. And I think that could well be determinative in Showtime’s decision. And if they want to do it again, I got a lot of stuff going on, and I’ll drop everything to do it.”

The entire first season of Dexter: New Blood is now streaming on Showtime.
