There was a time when the LGBTQ+ community was heavily discriminated against in the world of entertainment. It was difficult for actors and actresses to find any TV series or movies that openly focused on openly gay characters or were willing to hire them. This stigma had a negative impact on celebrities who were actually part of the LGBQT+ community.

Fortunately, here we are in 2021, and the entertainment industry has gradually become more and more inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community, enabling them to be more widely understood, accepted, and even celebrated. To commemorate this monumental progression, we have listed over 75 beautiful celebrities who have bravely come out as being a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Amber Heard

In an interview with Metro in 2011, Amber Heard pointed out that she doesn’t label herself one way or another. “I have had successful relationships with men and now a woman,” Heard said. “I love who I love; it’s the person that matters.” Heard was in a relationship with photographer Tasya van Ree from 2008 to 2012. Three years later, she tied the knot with Johnny Depp, but their marriage ended in a divorce, which was finalized in 2017. Heard then dated Elon Musk for a year, until early 2018. In 2020, she started dating cinematographer Bianca Butti.

Heard first gained mainstream recognition for her supporting roles in 2008 movies Never Back Down and Pineapple Express. She then went on to appear in 2011’s The Rum Diary, 2013’s Machete Kills, 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, and more recently, in 2018’s Aquaman.

Demi Lovato

In May 2021, Demi Lovato publicly came out as non-binary and announced their decision to change their gender pronouns to “they/them.” “This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work,” explained Lovato in an Instagram post. “I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.”

Lovato started their showbiz career as a child actress, appearing in shows for young audiences, such as Barney & Friends and Camp Rock. They rose to prominence as a singer after This Is Me their debut single and duet with Joe Jonas peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, Lovato has released seven studio albums. Their fifth album, Confident, was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 59th Grammy Awards.

Gillian Anderson

In an interview with Out magazine in March 2012, Gillian Anderson revealed that she had past relationships with women. Three years later, she reiterated in an interview with The Daily Telegraph that she’s not closed to the idea of entering another same-sex relationship, noting that “a relationship is about loving another human being; their gender is irrelevant.” Since then, Anderson has accepted the label bisexual, saying in a 2018 interview with The Times: “It’s just who I am. I have absolutely no issue with it whatsoever, and I don’t really care if other people have an issue with it.”

Anderson is best known for her portrayal of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on the Fox series The X-Files, which earned her a Prime Emmy Award in 1997. Her other notable TV roles include DSU Stella Gibson on BBC’s The Fall, sex therapist Jean Milburn on Netflix’s Sex Education, and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in season 4 of the Netflix drama series The Crown.

Ben Platt came out as gay to his family when he was 12 but only started talking about his sexuality publicly ahead of the 2019 release of his first studio album, Sing to Me Instead. In an interview with Variety in October of that year, Platt explained why it took so many years before he came out publicly. He said, “There was never like a gung-ho of ‘Let’s come out as soon as possible’ because no matter how forward-thinking we all get, it becomes an obstacle a little bit in the case of auditioning, producers and casting and directors. Hopefully, we’re moving a bit beyond that.”

Platt started his acting career in musical theater, appearing in productions of The Sound of Music, The Book of Mormon, and Dear Evan Hansen, for which he earned multiple accolades, including the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Awards. Platt’s acting credits also include the Pitch Perfect film series and Netflix’s comedy-drama series The Politician, for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy.

Most Game of Thrones fans first found out that Kristian Nairn, who played Hodor on the HBO series, is gay in his interview with WinterIsComing.net back in March 2014. When the interviewer mentioned that Nairn had an extensive “bear” following, the actor said: “Well, in all honesty, when you talk about ‘the gay community,’ you are talking about my community. I am aware of it yeah, and I think it’s really lovely. There’s not a day that I don’t get a few messages, but 99 percent or more are super sweet and nothing smutty at all! Again, it’s a privilege, and I really mean that.”

Although media described this interview as his coming out, Nairn stated he had “never been in.” “I’ve never hidden my sexuality from anyone, my whole life,” he added. “And I’ve been waiting for someone to ask about it in an interview, ‘cause it’s not something you just blurt out. I’ve tried to lead the questions a few times, to no avail!” In fact, Nairn, who is also a progressive trance DJ, used to play in a Belfast gay club called Kremlin.

Amy Winehouse

According to the now defunct U.K. tabloid News of the World, the late Amy Winehouse reportedly told her friends that she’s bisexual. “So what? I like girls as well,” said the singer-songwriter, who was previously married to Blake Fielder-Civil. “There is something about being with a woman that is very satisfying. I don’t care what people think about me being bi – I do what feels good.”

Winehouse achieved international fame after the successful release of her 2006 album Back to Black, which was nominated for British Album of the Year at the 2007 Brit Awards. At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, she won Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Rehab, and Best Pop Vocal Album for Back to Black.

Elliot Page publicly came out as gay during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to Thrive conference in Las Vegas back in February 2014. Page, however, revealed in November 2017 that he had been outed at age 18 by filmmaker Brett Ratner while on the set of the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand. Fast-forward to December 2020, Page took to his social media accounts to announce that he is transgender. He also specified at that time that his pronouns are he/him and they/them, and changed his name from Ellen to Elliot.

In October 2014, four months after attending San Francisco’s gay pride parade along with a delegation of Apple staff, Tim Cook publicly came out as gay in an editorial for Bloomberg Business, saying, “I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.” Cook noted that while many people at the company were aware of his sexual orientation “for years,” he sought to focus on Apple’s products and customers rather than his personal life. Almost a year after coming out, Cook said in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that while he valued his privacy “significantly,” he felt that he was “valuing it too far above” what he could do for other people, and that’s what pushed him to tell everyone his truth.

Cook, who has been the chief executive officer of Apple Inc. since 2011, joined the company in March 1998 as a senior vice president for worldwide operations. He then served as the executive vice president for worldwide sales and operations, and later became the chief operating officer under the company’s co-founder Steve Jobs.

Married and divorced twice, Sony Music Entertainment chief creative officer Clive Davis publicly came out as bisexual in his 2013 autobiography The Soundtrack of My Life. In the same year, during a guest appearance in the daytime talk show Katie, Davis said he hoped his coming out would lead to a “greater understanding of bisexuality.”

Prior to becoming the CCO at Sony Music Entertainment in 2018, Davis served as the president of Columbia Records from 1967 to 1973 and the president of Arista Records from 1974 through 2000. He also previously served as chair and CEO of the RCA Music Group, J Records, and BMG North America.

Frank Ocean

Grammy-winning artist Frank Ocean publicly came out as a member of the LGBTQ community in July 2012, when he published an open letter on his Tumblr blog recounting unrequited feelings he had for another young man when he was 19 years old. “I don’t know what happens now, and that’s alright. I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore… I feel like a free man,” read a portion of his open letter. Soon after Ocean’s coming out made headlines, several celebrities had voiced their support for him, including Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Tyler the Creator, and Russell Simmons.

Ocean rose to prominence following the 2012 release of his debut studio album Channel Orange, which won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards. The album’s hit single Thinkin Bout You, meanwhile, earned Ocean a nomination for Record of the Year. After Channel Orange, Ocean went on to release two more studio albums in 2016: Endless and Blonde.

Basketball player Jason Collins came out as gay in the cover story of the May 6th, 2013 issue of Sports Illustrated, becoming the first active male athlete from one of the four major North American professional team sports to publicly do so. In the first-person story by Collins with journalist Franz Lidz, the athlete shared that the murder of gay university student Matthew Shepard in 1998 led him to choose “98” for his jersey number, in Shepard’s honor. Collins called the number “a statement to myself, my family and my friends.”

Collins was a center for 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association. Collins was selected by the Houston Rockets as the 18th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft and went on to play for the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and Brooklyn Nets.

Charlie Carver publicly came out as gay on Instagram in January 2016. In his five-part Instagram post, Carver shared that he knew he’s gay at age 12. “It was around that age that I also knew … that I was different from some of the other boys in my grade,” Carver wrote. “Over time, this abstract ‘knowing’ grew and articulated itself through a painful gestation marked by feelings of despair and alienation, ending in a climax of saying three words out loud: ‘I am gay.’ I said them to myself at first, to see how they felt. They rang true.” Carver said he decided to publicly come out because he felt a responsibility to be honest and inspire millions to be as authentic as possible.

Carver is best known for his role as Ethan on MTV’s Teen Wolf. His other notable TV roles include Porter Scavo on ABC’s Desperate Housewives, Scott Frost on HBO’s The Leftovers, and most recently, Huck Finnigan on Netflix’s Ratched.

Raven Symone

When asked how she identifies, Black revealed she has had lots of conversations with herself, her friends, and her family about that. “To me the word ‘queer’ feels really nice,” she said. “I’ve dated a lot of different types of people and I just don’t really know what the future holds. Some days I feel a little more on the gay side than others.”

Black rose to prominence after the music video for her 2011 single Friday went viral on YouTube and other social media sites. Though the song was derided by many music critics, with some even calling it as “the worst song ever,” Black went on to release three extended plays. Grande rose to fame for her role as Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon series Victorious and Sam & Cat. She subsequently signed with Republic Records in 2011 after label executives discovered YouTube videos of her covering songs. Since then, she has released six studio albums.
