Born: March 30th, 1853
Died: July 29, 1890
Age at death: 37
Cause of death: Self-inflicted gunshot wound
Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions. He spent time in psychiatric hospitals, including a period at Saint-Rémy. After he discharged himself, he moved to the Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris under the care of the homeopathic doctor Paul Gachet. However, his depression continued, and on July 27th, 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest with a Lefaucheux revolver and died from his injuries two days later.
Considered a madman and a failure, Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime. His reputation only began to grow in the early 20th century when the Fauves and German expressionists started to incorporate elements of his painting style into their works. Some of his most famous paintings include The Starry Night, The Painter of Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, and Van Gogh self-portrait, which you can see above.
