Cause of death: Airplane crash

After a show in Clear Lake, Iowa, singer-songwriter Buddy Holly chartered an airplane to travel to his next show in Moorhead, Minnesota. Soon after takeoff, the plane crashed into a frozen cornfield, killing Holly and his fellow musicians Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. The pilot of the plane, Roger Peterson, also died in the accident. The three musicians, who were ejected from the fuselage upon impact, suffered severe head and chest injuries.

Buddy Holly, whose real name is Charles Hardin Holley, was a central and pioneering figure of mid-1950s rock and roll. Some of his notable songs include That’ll Be the Day, Peggy Sue, Everyday, and It’s So Easy. He was among the first artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and was even ranked by the Rolling Stone magazine as 13th on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
