Cancelled Netflix shows

Has your favorite Netflix series joined the streamer’s list of cancelled shows?

Cancelled Netflix shows

Netflix releases hundreds of original series every year, and as the streaming service tries to top the number of shows it adds to its library year after year, it’s hard to keep track which programs have already been cancelled. Netflix also has a habit of cancelling shows quietly, leaving a lot of fans in the dark about the fate of their favorite series. Not sure if the streamer has pulled the plug on the shows you watch? Read on for a list of the cancelled Netflix shows.

Hit & Run

Cancelled Netflix shows 74

Date cancelled: September 2021

Though well-received by critics and audiences alike, Hit & Run was cancelled by Netflix partly because of its expensive production cost. Filmed in New York and Israel, the nine-episode first season of the Israeli-American thriller took three years to produce due to the COVID-related industry shutdown that took place in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hit & Run also didn’t seem to attract enough viewers to warrant a second season. After premiering on Netflix on August 6th, the series managed to break into Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 the following week at No. 8. That, however, was the only time it appeared on the overall weekly chart, which Netflix originals like Outer Banks and Virgin River recently topped.

Narcos: Mexico

Cancelled Netflix shows 75

Date cancelled: September 2021

Netflix announced in September 2021 that the upcoming third season of Narcos: Mexico will be its last. Scheduled to premiere in November 2021, Narcos: Mexico season 3 is set in the ‘90s when the globalization of the drug business ignites. It examines the war that breaks out following Félix Gallardo’s (Diego Luna) arrest and follows newly independent cartels and a new generation of Mexican kingpins as they struggle to survive the political upheaval.

Though Narcos: Mexico is coming to an end, it’s possible that the Narcos franchise will continue with a new installment set in another country, as series executive producers previously said that they intend to follow the drug trade across various countries.

Bonding

Cancelled Netflix shows 76

Date cancelled: July 2021

Bonding follows the life of psychology student Tiffany “Tiff” Chester (Zoe Levin) who is moonlighting as a dominatrix. To help her balance her personal life with school and her job, she recruits her semi-estranged gay best friend from high school, Pete Devin (Brendan Scannell), to be her assistant. Because of its BDSM theme, the first season of the Rightor Doyle-created series struck up controversy that helped it score a second season.

Netflix, however, cancelled Bonding in July, suggesting that its sophomore run didn’t pull enough viewers to justify a third season. Aside from Levin and Devin, the dark comedy series also stars Micah Stock, Theo Stockman, and Nana Mensah.

Country Comfort

Cancelled Netflix shows 77

Date cancelled: July 2021

Country Comfort was cancelled by Netflix just four months after its March 2021 premiere. Netflix didn’t offer an explanation for the show’s cancellation, but the 10-episode freshman run of the Caryn Lucas-created series seemingly failed to attract enough viewers to justify a second season.

The comedy series stars Katharine McPhee as Bailey, an aspiring country singer who takes a job as a nanny for a rugged cowboy named Beau (Eddie Cibrian) and his five children after getting kicked out of her up-and-coming band. With a never-give-up attitude and loads of Southern charm, the newbie-nanny is able to navigate the family dynamics and be the mother figure they’ve been missing. To her surprise, Bailey also gets the band she’s been missing in this musically talented family who help her get back on the road to stardom.

Cursed

Cancelled Netflix shows 78

Date cancelled: July 2021

One of the many cancelled Netflix shows of 2021 that only ran for one season, Cursed didn’t seem to capture the zeitgeist or seize the cultural conversation the way the streaming giant would have hoped. Though there were a lot of things to admire about the show, including its impressive production design, realistic visual effects, and brilliant performances from the cast, Cursed only debuted to lukewarm reviews and fan response, only generating a 67 percent “fresh” average on Rotten Tomatoes. It also didn’t seem to help that Netflix has already renewed Shadow and Bone and The Witcher for additional seasons, as it’s possible that the streamer doesn’t want to crowd its library with too many medieval fantasy drama series.

Based on Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler’s illustrated book, Cursed was a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend as told through the eyes of Nimue (Katherine Langford), a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful and tragic Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she found an unexpected partner in Arthur (Devon Terrell), a young mercenary in a quest to find Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgård) and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue became a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther (Sebastian Armesto).

Mr. Iglesias

Cancelled Netflix shows 79

Date cancelled: July 2021

Over six months after Mr. Iglesias wrapped its 11-episode sophomore run in December 2020, Netflix announced that the comedy series won’t be returning for another season. Though there won’t be a third season for the Kevin Hench-created series, the streamer reportedly made a deal with its lead star Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias to film a third comedy special.

Mr. Iglesias stars Iglesias as the titular good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater in Long Beach, California. He takes on teaching gifted-but-misfit kids to not only save them from being “counseled out” by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal, but also to help them unlock their full potential. In his private life, he recently quit drinking alcohol and regularly attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

The Crew

Cancelled Netflix shows 80

Date cancelled: July 2021

Netflix cancelled the comedy series The Crew last July after just one season. Though there won’t be a second season for Jeff Lowell-created series, Netflix reportedly made a deal with series star Kevin James to develop a single-camera comedy series that he will star in and produce.

The Crew stars James as crew chief Kevin Gibson who runs a NASCAR garage. When the owner steps down and passes the team off to his Stanford-educated daughter, Catherine Spencer (Jillian Mueller), Kevin finds himself at odds with the tech-reliant millennials Catherine starts bringing in to modernize the team. The series also stars Freddie Stroma, Gary Anthony Williams, Dan Ahdoot, and Sarah Stiles.

Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!

Cancelled Netflix shows 81

Date cancelled: June 2021

The comedy series Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! is not returning for a second season. Though it’s not clear why Netflix pulled the plug on the show last June after just one season, Deadline reported that Jamie Foxx, who starred in and co-created the series with Jim Patterson, was involved in the decision to end the show. Despite the cancellation, Netflix and Foxx’s creative partnership will continue with the upcoming films They Cloned Tyrone and Day Shift.

Inspired by Foxx’s relationship with his daughter Corinne Foxx, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! also stars David Alan Grier, Kyla-Drew, Porscha Coleman, Jonathan Kite, and Heather Hemmens.

Grand Army

Cancelled Netflix shows 82

Date cancelled: June 2021

Netflix cancelled the Katie Cappiello-created series after just one season. Variety broke the cancellation news eight months after the show’s October 2020 premiere. The streamer didn’t provide any reason for cancelling Grand Army, but a behind-the-scenes drama that surfaced prior to the show’s debut might have impacted the series’ ultimate fate.

When the trailer for the series was released in fall 2020, playwright Ming Peiffer ― who served as a story editor and a co-writer of episode 8 ― revealed on Twitter that she and two other writers of color on the show quit after experiencing “racist exploitation and abuse.” It’s unclear if those claims have been verified, but Peiffer has made no further comment since then.

Loosely based on 2013’s Slut: The Play by Cappiello, Grand Army followed five students at the largest public high school in Brooklyn as they take on a chaotic world and fight to succeed, survive, wild out, break free, and seize the future.

The Irregulars

Cancelled Netflix shows 83

Date cancelled: May 2021

The Irregulars was cancelled by Netflix after one season. Netflix didn’t provide a reason for the show’s cancellation, but Screen Rant reported that the streamer might have pulled the plug on the mystery crime drama series because it didn’t project to be a multi-season hit. The website also noted that the cancellation of The Irregulars might be a result of Netflix becoming more selective about its funding, as industry norms continue to change during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Inspired by the Baker Street Irregulars from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels, The Irregulars followed the titular group of teenagers who work for John Watson to solve supernatural crimes while searching for Sherlock Holmes. The series, which launched on March 26th, starred Thaddea Graham as Bea, McKell David as Spike, Jojo Macari as Billy, Darci Shaw as Jessie, and Harrison Osterfield as the Duke of Albany, Prince Leopold. Recurring actors include Royce Pierreson as Watson and Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Holmes.

The Duchess

Cancelled Netflix shows 84

Date cancelled: April 2021

Katherine Ryan, the creator, writer, and star of The Duchess, revealed in an episode of Vicky Pattison’s The Secret To… podcast last April that the streamer cancelled The Duchess after a single six-episode season. “[Netflix] didn’t want to make any more, not enough people watched it,” said Ryan. “I think something like 10 million people watched it in 28 days and that wasn’t enough.”

In The Duchess, Ryan played the role of Katherine, a fashionably disruptive single mom living in London, who was starting to consider having another kid, provided she could find a suitable father for the child first. The series also starred Katy Byrne as Katherine’s daughter Olive, Rory Keenan as Katherine’s off-the-grid ex Shep, and Steen Raskopoulos as Katherine’s new orthodontist boyfriend Eva.

Special

Cancelled Netflix shows 85

Date cancelled: March 2021

Comedy-drama Special was renewed for a second season in December 2019. Fast-forward to March 2021, it was revealed that its sophomore run will serve as its final season. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series star and creator Ryan O’Connell revealed that the decision to end the show with season 2 was made by Netflix.

“People will be surprised that Special is ending but this is just the tip!” O’Connell told the news outlet in March 2021. “[But] I’m not finished telling stories about disability. I’m not finished telling queer stories. This is really just a beginning of a new chapter, so hang tight, baby, I’m coming!”

Based on O’Connell’s book I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves, Special follows Ryan, a gay man with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity and finally go after the life he wants.

Feel Good

Cancelled Netflix shows 86

Date cancelled: December 2020

British comedy-drama series Feel Good was renewed for a second and final season in December 2020. In a statement, series star and co-creator Mae Martin implied that it’s their decision to end the show with season 2.

“I’m beyond excited to be able to return to the world of Feel Good, and to see Mae and George’s love story through to the dramatic conclusion we had always planned,” said Martin. “I’m really deeply attached to this story and I’m so grateful to be getting back to work with the incredible team at Objective Fiction and our hilarious cast. Having spent most of 2020 speaking only to my kettle and my television as I watched the world burn on the internet, I’m euphoric to be around other human beings again. Seeing Joe Hampson’s and my dumb jokes come to life is heaven. Thank you, Netflix!”

Lucifer

Cancelled Netflix shows 87

Date cancelled: June 2020

Lucifer’s sixth and final season is dropping on Netflix on September 10th. Netflix renewed the Tom Ellis-led series for season 6 in June 2020, a year after the streaming giant originally announced that the show would end with season 5. While Netflix’s decision to reverse the show’s cancellation came as a delightful surprise for fans, the streamer made it very clear that season 6 will be the show’s ultimate swan song.

In the last 10 episodes of the series, Lucifer (Ellis) scores a promotion but doesn’t know whether he really wants his new job. Chloe (Lauren German) prepares to give up detective work while Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) joins the LAPD.

Money Heist

Cancelled Netflix shows 88

Date cancelled: July 2020

The upcoming 10-episode season 5 of Money Heist will be its last. Though series creator Alex Pina didn’t reveal the reason behind the decision to end the series with season 5, he did say that the final batch of episodes will go beyond the heist as The Professor (Álvaro Morte) and his crew vow to avenge the death of their team member Nairobi (Alba Flores). “We are moving from a chess game – a mere intellectual strategy – to a war strategy: attack and contention,” Pina told Entertainment Weekly.

The final season doesn’t have a release date yet, but production has already started in Denmark on August 3rd.

AJ and the Queen

Cancelled Netflix shows 89

Date cancelled: March 2020

Created by RuPaul Charles and Michael Patrick King, this comedy-drama series stars Charles as Ruby Red, a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America in her 1990s RV doing club gigs along the way. Ruby is accompanied by AJ (Izzy G.), a recently orphaned scrappy 10-year-old stowaway with whom she strikes an unlikely friendship.

Though AJ and the Queen was commended for its themes of love and acceptance, it failed to attract enough viewers to be picked up for a second season. Netflix officially cancelled the series two months after its 10-episode first season premiered.

Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show

Cancelled Netflix shows 90

Date cancelled: February 2020

Though the cancellation of the series was revealed to the public in June 2020, series performer Monique Moses told IndieWire that the all-black comedy troupe behind the show actually learned the disappointing fate of the series back in February. While Moses acknowledged that the show struggled with viewership, she felt that Netflix failed to promote the series to a much wider audience.

Also starring Shawtane Bowen, Jonathan Braylock, Ray Cordova, James III, Caroline Martin, Jerah Milligan, and Keisha Zollar, the six-episode first season of Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show features comedy sketches intermixed with clips from a reality television show where the troupe members live together in a house.

Atypical

Cancelled Netflix shows 91

Date cancelled: February 2020

The upcoming season 4 of the coming-of-age dramedy will be its last. Though Netflix didn’t give any reason behind the show’s cancellation, it seems that the story of Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), a 19-year-old young adult on the autism spectrum who searches for love and independence, is coming to its natural conclusion.

And since only around 10 Netflix original series have made it past three seasons on the streaming service, the fact that the Robia Rashid-created show was renewed for a fourth season is already a huge feat.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Cancelled Netflix shows 92

Date cancelled: July 2020

The Riverdale offshoot starring Kiernan Shipka in the title role is ending with its upcoming part 4. Though the cancellation came as a surprise to fans, it appeared that showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had known for quite some time that the series is coming to an end. In a statement following the streamer’s announcement, Aguirre-Sacasa thanked Netflix for letting them “tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it.”

Netflix didn’t give any explanation on why it cancelled the series, but it’s likely that the streamer thought that ordering another season would be too costly to produce, given all the bonuses and salary bumps that come with a season renewal. Thus, Sabrina has made it on the list of cancelled Netflix shows.

Dead to Me

Cancelled Netflix shows 93

Date cancelled: July 2020

Dead to Me’s upcoming season 3 will be its last. Created by Liz Feldman, Dead to Me tells the story of the unlikely friendship that blossoms between Jen Harding (Christina Applegate) and Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini) after meeting each other in a therapy group for bereft spouses.

While Netflix and Feldman didn’t offer any explanation about the cancellation, a tweet from Applegate implied that it’s a mutual decision. “I will miss these ladies,” Applegate wrote, referring to Feldman and her co-star Cardellini. “But we felt this was the best way to tie up the story of these women.” Production on season 3 has no start date yet, but Applegate noted in her tweet they will be “getting back to work when it is safe to do so.”

Insatiable

Cancelled Netflix shows 94

Date cancelled: February 2020

The dark comedy series created by Lauren Gussis was cancelled by Netflix after two seasons. Cast member Alyssa Milano confirmed the show’s cancellation on Twitter, and while the streaming service didn’t provide any explanation on why it didn’t renew the series for a third season, it’s likely that the show’s viewing figures weren’t high enough to secure another installment.

Allegations that Insatiable was promoting fat-shaming might have also affected Netflix’s decision to end the series, which follows former overweight teen-turned-aspiring beauty queen Patty Bladell (Debby Ryan) as she seeks revenge on her bullies.

Lost in Space

Cancelled Netflix shows 95

Date cancelled: March 2020

The upcoming third season of Lost in Space will be its last. Shortly after Netflix renewed the sci-fi series for a third and final season in March, showrunner Zack Estrin released a statement, revealing that the reimagining of the 1965 series of the same name has always been meant as a trilogy. “From the beginning, we’ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy,” Estrin said at the time. “A three-part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end.

It’s also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode — if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission — it’s Will (Maxwell Jenkins), Penny (Mina Sundwall), Judy (Taylor Russell), Maureen (Molly Parker), John (Toby Stephens), Don West (Ignacio Serricchio), Dr. Smith (Parkey Posey)… and The Robot (Brian Steele). And, of course, Debbie the Chicken.” Season 3 has no release date yet.

Marianne

Cancelled Netflix shows 96

Date cancelled: January 2020

The French horror series created and directed by Samuel Bodin was reportedly meant to run for three seasons. But earlier this year, Bodin revealed on Instagram that the show was cancelled by Netflix after its eight-episode freshman run didn’t seem to meet the streamer’s target viewership.

Written by Bodin and Quoc Dang Tran, Marianne stars Victoire Du Bois as Emma Larsimon, a young novelist who realizes that the characters she writes in her horror novels are also in the real world.

Merry Happy Whatever

Cancelled Netflix shows 97

Date cancelled: April 2020

Created by Tucker Cawley, Merry Happy Weather was one of the many holiday-themed titles that arrived on Netflix in December 2019. Sadly, after receiving a lukewarm reception, the sitcom was officially cancelled by the streaming service after just one season.

The eight-episode freshman run of the sitcom follows Don Quinn (Dennis Quaid) as he struggles with different stresses of the holiday season, which becomes even more complicated after his youngest daughter Emmy (Bridgit Mendler) brings home her boyfriend Matt (Brent Morin) and reveals their plan to get married.

Messiah

Cancelled Netflix shows 98

Date cancelled: March 2020

Another one-and-done show at Netflix, Messiah centers on a CIA agent (Michelle Monaghan) who investigates a man (Mehdi Debhi) whose followers claim is the second coming of Jesus and who can apparently perform miracles. Almost three months after its January 1st debut, series actor Wil Traval revealed on Instagram that there would be no season 2 of Messiah.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix didn’t feel confident about producing another season of the show, which features an international cast and is filmed in several countries, given the ongoing threat of COVID-19.

Mortel

Cancelled Netflix shows 99

Date cancelled: January 2020

The French-produced supernatural series was dropped on Netflix in November 2019 but was cancelled two months later after it failed to attract a huge number of viewers. Created by Frederic Garcia, the six-episode first and final season of Mortel tells the story of two teenagers, Sofiane (Carl Malapa) and Victor (Nemo Schiffman), who make a pact with a voodoo god Obé (Corentin Fila) who gives them superpowers to solve and avenge the apparent murder of Sofiane’s brother.

Next In Fashion

Cancelled Netflix shows 100

Date cancelled: June 2020

Next In Fashion is Netflix’s first fashion design competition series. It debuted on the streamer last January but was cancelled this June just after one season. Hosted by designers Tan France and Alexa Chung, the 10-episode first season of the reality show follows 18 professional designers as they compete with each other in rounds based on design trends and styles that influence what people wear worldwide.

The winner received $250,000 and got the opportunity to debut a collection with luxury fashion retailer Net-a-Porter.

October Faction

Cancelled Netflix shows 101

Date cancelled: March 2020

Premiered in January 2020, the supernatural drama created by Damian Kindler was axed by Netflix after a single season. Like most of its cancellation announcements, the streamer didn’t disclose the reason why the series was not picked for another season.

Based on the comic series of the same name by Steve Niles and Damien Worm, October Faction follows monster hunters Fred (J.C. MacKenzie) and Deloris Allen (Tamara Taylor) who, after the death of Fred’s father, return to their hometown in upstate New York with their teenage children. As the family adjusts, Fred and Deloris must hide their identities as members of a secret organization, and quickly discover that their new small-town setting isn’t as idyllic as it seems.

Osmosis

Cancelled Netflix shows 102

Date cancelled: January 2020

Released in March 2019, Osmosis was cancelled by Netflix last January after it failed to get enough attention. Created by Audrey Fouché, the eight-episode single season of the French sci-fi drama is set in a near-future Paris and follows a group of singles who tries a new dating app called Osmosis.

With the use of implants, the app digs deep into the users’ brain data to find them a perfect match with 100% accuracy. But there’s a price to pay, as the technology can access the innermost recesses of the users’ minds as well as their best-kept secrets.

Ozark

Cancelled Netflix shows 103

Date cancelled: June 2020

Netflix renewed Ozark for a fourth and final season in June. While a lot of fans think that the critically acclaimed crime drama could go on for more seasons especially with how things ended in season 3, the streaming service had decided to end the story of the Byrdes with season 4, which will be released in two parts of seven episodes.

Showrunner Chris Mundy seemed fine about the cancellation, saying in a statement that they’re “thrilled to get the chance to bring the series home in the most fulfilling way possible.” Ozark season 4 has no release date yet.

Soundtrack

Cancelled Netflix shows 104

Date cancelled: January 2020

Released in December 2019, the musical drama starring Paul James, Callie Hernandez, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Jenna Dewan, among many others, was cancelled by Netflix after a single season. Created by Joshua Safran, Soundtrack takes a look at “the love stories connecting a diverse, disparate group of people in contemporary Los Angeles through the music that lives inside their hearts and minds.”

Safran had multiple seasons in mind for the series, and though Soundtrack won’t be back for season 2, its 10-episode freshman run features a closed-ended story. “There’s definitely more. When you get to the end [you’ll see],” he told The Hollywood Reporter prior to the show’s cancellation. “I did close it [season 1] though because it is a big swing and it’s weird and I didn’t want to leave an audience in the lurch.”

Spinning Out

Cancelled Netflix shows 105

Date cancelled: February 2020

Figure skating drama Spinning Out was cancelled by Netflix in February, just over a month after its January 1st premiere. Created by Samantha Stratto, the 10-episode series stars Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker, a young ice skater who suffers a serious injury and is given the opportunity to restart her career as a pair skater all while hiding her family’s history of mental illness.

The show follows the Baker family along with Kat’s partner Justin Davis (Evan Roderick) and his family. Though Spinning Out received mostly positive reviews from critics, it apparently didn’t attract enough viewers to be renewed for a second season.

The Kominsky Method

Cancelled Netflix shows 106

Date cancelled: July 2020

Netflix renewed the comedy-drama series starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin for a third and final season in July. The streamer didn’t offer any explanation for the cancellation, but series creator Chuck Lorre seemed fine with the decision. “The Kominsky Method has been a true passion project for me and it’s been an incredible experience to see the warm response from both audiences and critics. I’m excited to wrap up the story with this final chapter,” Lorre said in a statement.

The half-hour comedy centers on the adventures of Sandy Kominsky (Douglas), an aging former actor-turned-acting coach, and his agent and friend Norman Newlander (Arkin). The final season has no release date yet.

Turn Up Charlie

Cancelled Netflix shows 107

Date cancelled: April 2020

Co-created and executive produced by Idris Elba, comedy series Turn Up Charlie stars Elba as the titular character, a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who’s given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a nanny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter.

Though Netflix cancelled the series just over a month after its March 15th premiere, the streaming service said in a statement that people at the company are looking forward to continuing their relationship with Elba on future projects.

V Wars

Cancelled Netflix shows 108

Date cancelled: March 2020

Based on the eponymous novel series and graphic novels by Jonathan Maberry, V Wars stars Ian Somerhalder as Dr. Luther Swann, a scientist who “enters a world of untold horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans. As the disease spreads and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps pitting normal people against the growing number of these so-called vampires.”

Though the sci-fi horror was cancelled by Netflix after one season, Somerhalder said in an Instagram video in April that V Wars was not over yet, as he and his producing partners were trying to find a new home for the series.

13 Reasons Why

Cancelled Netflix shows 109

Date cancelled: August 2019

The teen drama starring Dylan Minnette in the lead role was renewed for a fourth and final season in August 2019. Based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Jay Asher, the series ended its run in June 2020.

A spokesperson for Netflix told Express.co.uk that the streaming service cancelled the series because season 4 would feature the core cast’s graduation from high school which would be a natural conclusion to the show.

Anne With An E

Cancelled Netflix shows 110

Date cancelled: November 2019

Netflix and CBC cancelled the drama in November 2019 after three seasons. Though younger viewers love the show, Sally Catto, general manager of programming for CBC English Television, said that one of the main factors that led to the cancellation of Anne with an E was the fact that it didn’t register enough of an audience boost in the 25-54 age range. “They, unfortunately, didn’t lift enough,” Catto explained. “They just weren’t reaching our specific target.”

The fate of the show, however, was foreshadowed in October of that year when CBC President Catherine Tait said that the Canadian broadcaster would no longer create new shows with Netflix because streaming services, in general, are not required to put a portion of their gross revenue into the Canada Media Fund to support creators. “We’re not going to do deals that hurt the long-term viability of our domestic industry,” Tait said at the time. “A number of countries have done deals, as we did, with Netflix … and over time we start to see that we’re feeding the growth of Netflix, or we’re feeding the growth of Amazon, rather than feeding our own domestic business and industry.”

Bojack Horseman

Cancelled Netflix shows 111

Date cancelled: September 2019

The adult animated series was cancelled by Netflix after six seasons. The second half of its 16-episode final season arrived on the streaming service in January 2020. Series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg admitted that he was surprised when he found out that Netflix decided to cancel the show, saying that he actually thought BoJack Horseman would “go a couple more years.”

While it’s unclear why exactly Netflix decided to pull the plug on the series, one thing is for sure, the cancellation was entirely the streamer’s decision.

Chambers

Cancelled Netflix shows 112

Date cancelled: June 2019

Created by Leah Rachel, Chambers starred Sivan Alyra Rose as Sasha, a teenager who experiences disturbing visions after receiving a heart transplant and sets out to solve the mystery of her donor’s death. Uma Thurman and Tony Goldwyn co-starred as the donor’s grieving parents, and also served as producers on the show.

The 10-episode freshman run of the supernatural horror arrived on Netflix in April, but since it didn’t garner enough buzz, the streamer decided to cancel it after just one season.

Dark

Cancelled Netflix shows 113

Date cancelled: May 2019

The German sci-fi thriller was renewed for a third and final season in May 2019. In the same month, series co-creator Baran bo Odar revealed on Instagram that they “always had three seasons in mind” when they developed Dark, so they’re “happy” that they got to tell the story in its entirety. The show’s last batch of episodes arrived on Netflix in June 2020.

Dear White People

Cancelled Netflix shows 114

Date cancelled: October 2019

The upcoming fourth season of the satirical dramedy will be its last. Since Netflix rarely release viewership details for its shows, it’s unclear whether Dear White People’s cancellation was due to low ratings. But one thing’s for sure, series creator Justin Simien is “grateful” that his “little indie-that-could has made it to four seasons at Netflix.”

The final season of the show starring Logan Browning, Brandon P. Bell, and DeRon Horton, among many others, will arrive on the streaming service later this year.

Designated Survivor

Cancelled Netflix shows 115

Date cancelled: July 2019

The political thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland was picked up by Netflix for a 10-episode third season following its cancellation at ABC after two seasons. The streamer, however, announced in July 2019, that there would be no season 4. In an interview with Scala Radio, Sutherland, who also exec produced the series, revealed that viewing figures weren’t the main why the streaming service ultimately pulled the plug on the series.

“We had an amazing experience with Netflix and a kind of freedom that was wonderful. But the reality is because the contracts were so complicated and different from network television to Netflix, they didn’t book a lot of the actors who were on the show and they took other jobs. I don’t blame them for a second for that,” Sutherland said. “So I think doing a season four would be very complicated and difficult… I think it’s time for all of us to go and find something new to do.”

Friends from College

Cancelled Netflix shows 116

Date cancelled: February 2019

The comedy series, which follows a close-knit group of Harvard alumni in their 40s as they navigate their ambitious yet clumsy and romantically intertwined lives in New York City, was cancelled by Netflix after two seasons.

The streaming service didn’t offer any explanation about the cancellation, but the show’s negative reception from critics clearly didn’t help it secure a third season. “Even a cast of talented comedic actors can’t keep Friends from College from being anything but underwhelming,” reads the critics’ consensus for the show’s first season on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fuller House

Cancelled Netflix shows 117

Date cancelled: January 2019

Netflix renewed the sitcom for a fifth and final season in January 2019. The first half of the final season premiered on the streaming service in December that year, while the second half arrived on the streamer in June 2020.

Netflix didn’t explain the reason for the cancellation but viewership data from analytics company Jumpshot revealed that the show’s viewership fell by 52% from Season 1 to Season 2 in their first month of release. There’s also a 10% drop in viewership between Seasons 3 and 4.

Glow

Cancelled Netflix shows 118

Date cancelled: September 2019

The upcoming fourth season of the wrestling dramedy will be its last. Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for the show’s final season, but it will likely arrive on the streamer sometime in 2020. Though it’s unclear why Netflix decided to end the critically acclaimed drama starring Alison Brie, it’s possible that the streamer decided to end the series due to low ratings.

Unbeknownst to most fans, a Wall Street Journal article published in November 2018 claimed that the streamer was actually very close to canceling the show after its first season due to disappointing ratings. If there’s truth to this, then the positive reception from critics was basically the reason the show secured three more seasons following its series premiere in 2017.

Grace and Frankie

Cancelled Netflix shows 119

Date cancelled: September 2019

Starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the titular roles, the comedy series was renewed for a seventh and final season in September 2019. In an interview with Insider in December of that year, Fonda said that the show’s cancellation was Netflix’s sole decision. “You know, they have their algorithms and their rules and… a point comes where it just doesn’t make financial sense for them. We’re going to be very sad. I can tell you,” Fonda said at the time.

The show’s final batch of episodes has no release date yet, as production on the season was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jessica Jones

Cancelled Netflix shows 120

Date cancelled: February 2019

Netflix canceled the Krysten Ritter-led series in February 2019, making the show’s third season its last. The cancellation was part of the streaming service’s decision to let go of its entire slate of Marvel programming ahead of the November 2019 launch of its rival streamer Disney+.

Though Netflix’s Marvel TV Universe had ended, it doesn’t necessarily mean that fans have seen the last of Jessica Jones and her fellow Defenders Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. In an open letter to fans that same month, former Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb teased that the cancelled Marvel shows on Netflix might find a new life on other platforms.

Mystery Science Theater 3000

Cancelled Netflix shows 121

Date cancelled: November 2019

After airing its original run on KTMA-TV, Comedy Central, and The Sci-Fi Channel from 1988 to 1999, Netflix ordered two seasons of the show: the eight-episode Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return, which debuted in 2017; and the six-episode MST3K: The Gauntlet that premiered in 2018.

But in November 2019, Jonah Ray, host of the new MST3K, tweeted that Netflix had cancelled the show, which was later confirmed by the streaming service. As usual, Netflix didn’t offer any explanation about the cancellation, so we could only assume that the revival series didn’t attract enough viewers to get a third season.

No Good Nick

Cancelled Netflix shows 122

Date cancelled: September 2019

Created by David H. Steinberg and Keetgi Kogan, No Good Nick centers on 13-year-old Nicole (Siena Agudong) who shows up on the doorsteps of the Thompsons, claiming to be their distant relative. In reality, Nicole, aka Nick, has plans to get revenge on the Thompsons after they “unknowingly ruined her life.”

It’s a fun and lighthearted comedy that keeps many secrets. However, those mysteries weren’t enough to keep audiences interested, which ultimately led to the show’s cancellation. The 20-episode single season of No Good Nick also starred Siena Agudong, Lauren Lindsey Donzis, Kalama Epstein, and Sean Astin.

One Day at a Time

Cancelled Netflix shows 123

Date cancelled: March 2019

One Day at a Time, the critically acclaimed reboot of the Norman Lear comedy series of the same name, was cancelled by Netflix after three seasons. In a statement, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos mentioned that “it’s disappointing that more viewers didn’t discover One Day at a Time” but believes “the series will stand the test of time.”

But in addition to its underwhelming viewership, the fact that One Day at a Time was owned by Sony Pictures Television also played a part in the cancellation of the series. Since Netflix didn’t own One Day at a Time, it had to pay a licensing fee to run the series. Fortunately for fans, three months after the show’s cancellation at Netflix, Pop revived the series for a 14-episode season 4. The first half of the season premiered in March 2020, while the other half is yet to be released.

Santa Clarita Diet

Cancelled Netflix shows 124

Date cancelled: April 2019

The horror-comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant was cancelled by Netflix after three seasons. Though Santa Clarita Diet’s critically acclaimed third season appeared on various Top 10 binge/streaming rankings weeks after its March 2019 release, that didn’t stop the streamer from cancelling the series a month after.

Since the Victor Fresco-created series was loved by both fans and critics, it’s likely that Netflix pulled the plug on the series after it had gotten too expensive to produce.

The OA

Cancelled Netflix shows 125

Date cancelled: August 2019

Starring Brit Marling in the titular role, The OA was cancelled by Netflix after two seasons. When deciding on the fate of a TV series, the streaming service adheres to the so-called “viewership versus cost” formula.

According to TheWrap, an insider with “knowledge of Netflix’s decision to cancel The OA confirmed that the mystery drama fell on the wrong side of the equation. The source said that while the show was “a big creative swing” that the streamer was “proud to take,” it just wasn’t paying off.

The Punisher

Cancelled Netflix shows 126

Date cancelled: February 2019

Netflix pulled the plug on the Jon Bernthal-led series after two seasons. The cancellation was part of the streaming service’s decision to let go of its entire slate of Marvel programming ahead of the November 2019 launch of its rival streamer Disney+.

Though Netflix’s Marvel TV Universe had ended, it doesn’t necessarily mean that fans have seen the last of Frank Castle and other characters featured in the shared universe. In an open letter to fans in February 2019, former Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb teased that cancelled Marvel shows on Netflix, including Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, might find a new life on other platforms.

The Rain

Cancelled Netflix shows 127

Date cancelled: June 2019

The upcoming third season of the Danish post-apocalyptic series will be its last. Netflix didn’t release any specific reason behind the show’s cancellation, but it’s possible that the series has already reached its natural conclusion.

Created by Jannik Tai Mosholt, Esben Toft Jacobsen, and Christian Potalivo, The Rain follows siblings Simone (Alba August) and Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) who emerge from a bunker six years after a virus carried by rainfall wiped out almost all humans in Scandinavia. While looking for their scientist father, the siblings join a group of young survivors and travel across Denmark and Sweden. Season 3 is scheduled to be released on August 6th, 2020.

Travelers

Cancelled Netflix shows 128

Date cancelled: February 2019

Netflix cancelled the sci-fi series after three seasons. Lead star Eric McCormack revealed the news in February 2019 in a video he shared on Twitter. “A lot of you have been asking about the possibility of a season 4, but many of you have been saying, ‘Look, if this is it, what a moving and surprising and profound ending it is.’ Well, I’m afraid it is,” says the actor. “Who knows what the future holds, but Travelers Program 1, as we call it, is complete.”

As usual, Netflix didn’t offer any explanation about the show’s cancellation, but it’s likely that the series didn’t draw enough viewers to be picked up for a fourth season.

Trinkets

Cancelled Netflix shows 129

Date cancelled: July 2019

Based on the novel of the same name by Kirsten Smith, Trinkets was renewed for a second and final season in July 2019. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix decided to announce the show’s final run just a month after its launch because season 2 was being written to provide the natural conclusion to the story of Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand), Moe (Kiana Madeira), and Tabitha (Quintessa Swindell) who all become friends after meeting each other at a Shoplifters Anonymous meeting. The show’s final season has no release date yet.

Tuca & Bertie

Cancelled Netflix shows 130

Date cancelled: July 2019

Though Tuca & Bertie premiered to critical acclaim on Netflix in May 2019, the streaming service pulled the plug on the series two months later, sparking controversy over the streamer’s inability to market the show to a wider audience.

Fortunately for fans, the Lisa Hanawalt-created animated sitcom was saved by Adult Swim in May 2020, ordering a 10-episode season 2, which is planned to premiere sometime in 2021. The comedy follows “the friendship between two 30-year-old bird-women who live in the same apartment building, Tuca (Tiffany Hadish), a cocky, carefree toucan, and Bertie (Ali Wong), an anxious, daydreaming songbird.”

She’s Gotta Have It

Cancelled Netflix shows 131

Date cancelled: July 2019

Based on Spike Lee’s 1986 film of the same name, the comedy series was cancelled by Netflix after two seasons. Starring DeWanda Wise, Anthony Ramos, Lyriq Bent, and Cleo Anthony, among many others, She’s Gotta Have It seemingly failed to attract huge numbers of viewers, which ultimately led to its cancellation.

All About Washingtons

Cancelled Netflix shows 132

Date cancelled: October 2018

Starring Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons and Justine Simmons, All About Washingtons was cancelled by Netflix two months after the August 2018 premiere of its 10-episode freshman run, which didn’t seem to get a lot of traction.

Created by Jeremy Bronson, the multi-camera comedy follows husband and wife Joey and Justine Washington as they raise their family. The series begins with Justine pursuing a career of her own after Joey decides to retire from a long career as legendary hip-hop royalty.

American Vandal

Cancelled Netflix shows 133

Date cancelled: October 2018

A parody of true crime documentaries, American Vandal was cancelled by Netflix after two seasons. Though the mockumentary won a Peabody Award and received an Emmy nomination for outstanding writing for a limited series, those didn’t stop the streamer from cancelling the show.

According to Variety, part of the decision to cancel the series was because it was not owned by Netflix. American Vandal was produced by CBS Television Studios, Funny Or Die, and 3 Arts.

Disjointed

Cancelled Netflix shows 134

Date cancelled: February 2018

Netflix axed the weed-themed series starring Kathy Bates after a 20-episode first season. The exact reason for the cancellation was unclear but several news outlets reported that it might be partly due to the show’s harsh critic reviews. “Bland and uneven, Disjointed does more smoke-blowing than joke-telling,” reads the critics’ consensus on the series on Rotten Tomatoes.

Created by David Javerbaum and Chuck Lorre, the show centers on Bates’ Ruth Whitefeather Feldman who employs her newly graduated son and a team of young budtenders to help run her Los Angeles cannabis dispensary.

Daredevil

Cancelled Netflix shows 135

Date cancelled: November 2018

Starring Charlie Cox as the titular blind lawyer-by-day who fights crime as a masked vigilante by night, Daredevil was cancelled by Netflix after three seasons. The cancellation was part of the streaming service’s decision to let go of its entire slate of Marvel programming ahead of the November 2019 launch of its rival streamer Disney+.

Though Netflix’s Marvel TV Universe had ended, it doesn’t necessarily mean that fans have seen the last of Matt Mudrock. Former Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb teased in an open letter to fans in February 2019 that cancelled Marvel shows on Netflix, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punishers might find a new life on other platforms.

Easy

Cancelled Netflix shows 136

Date cancelled: August 2018

Created, written, and directed by Joe Swanberg, Easy was cancelled by Netflix three seasons. The comedy-drama anthology series follows several Chicago residents as they try to navigate life issues such as love, relationships, and general knowledge.

It’s not exactly clear why the streaming service axed the series, but Swanberg told the Chicago Tribune in May 2019 that he had “very light discussions” with Netflix about the possibility of an Easy film, which would allow him to check in on the characters a couple of years later.

Everything Sucks!

Cancelled Netflix shows 137

Date cancelled: April 2018

The comedy-drama created by Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan was cancelled by Netflix after a single season. According to The Netflix Binge Factory, a feature published by Vulture in June 2018, the streamer axed Everything Sucks! because many viewers didn’t finish its first episode even though it’s only 23 minutes long.

Though the show had a loyal audience, Netflix didn’t feel like it would grow along with a second season. Starring Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Peyton Kennedy, Patch Darragh, Claudine Mboligikpelani, and many others, Everything Sucks focuses on a group of teenagers who make a movie together while dealing with finding their sexualities, mental health, and growing up.

Iron Fist

Cancelled Netflix shows 138

Date cancelled: October 2018

Starring Finn Jones as the titular Buddhist monk and martial artist, Iron Fist was axed by Netflix after two seasons. Though the series was arguably the least critically acclaimed Marvel series on Netflix, the show’s cancellation was part of the streaming service’s decision to let go of its entire slate of Marvel programming ahead of the November 2019 launch of its rival streamer Disney+.

Though Netflix’s Marvel TV Universe had ended, it doesn’t necessarily mean that fans have seen the last of Danny Rand. Former Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb teased in an open letter to fans in February 2019 that canceled Marvel shows on Netflix, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and The Punishers might still find a new life on other platforms.

Lady Dynamite

Cancelled Netflix shows 139

Date cancelled: January 2018

Loosely based on Maria Bamford’s life, the comedy series Lady Dynamite was cancelled by Netflix after two seasons.

Though the show had an impressive 97 percent critical score and an 80 percent rating among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, the show was still axed by the streamer, presumably after failing to attract enough viewers during its sophomore run.

Luke Cage

Cancelled Netflix shows 140

Date canceled: October 2018

Starring Mike Colter as the titular former convict with superhuman strength, Luke Cage was cancelled by Netflix two seasons. A source told The Hollywood Reporter that the cancellation was due to creative differences and the inability to agree to terms for the third season of the show.

But months later, it was revealed that the cancellation was actually part of Netflix’s decision to let go of its entire slate of Marvel programming ahead of the November 2019 launch of its rival streamer Disney+.

Orange Is the New Black

Cancelled Netflix shows 141

Date cancelled: October 2018

The critically acclaimed comedy-drama was cancelled by Netflix after seven seasons. While Netflix didn’t disclose the reason behind the cancellation, it seemed that the decision was a mutual agreement between the streamer and the series creator Jenji Kohan. Back in 2017, the Emmy winner told the New York Times that she was “leaning towards” a seventh season farewell.

Orange Is the New Black starred Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Michael Harney, Michelle Hurst, Kate Mulgrew, Jason Biggs, and Uzo Aduba, among many others.

Seven Seconds

Cancelled Netflix shows 142

Date cancelled: April 2018

Created by showrunner Veena Sud and starring Regina King, Seven Seconds was cancelled by Netflix after one season. Based on the Russian film The Major, the Fox 21-produced crime drama explored race in America through a story involving the hit-and-run of an African-American teenager by a white Jersey City cop and the crime’s subsequent cover-up by the mostly white police force.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in February 2018, Fox 21 Television Studios president Bert Salke said his hope was for Seven Seconds to run for “four or five” seasons by bringing back old characters while introducing new faces in an anthology format, as the series would remain rooted in Jersey City. Apparently, that didn’t push through, as Netflix rebranded Seven Seconds as a limited series following its cancellation.

The Break with Michelle Wolf

Cancelled Netflix shows 143

Date cancelled: August 2018

Designed to take a break from the seriousness of late-night comedy, The Break with Michelle Wolf makes news fun. Apparently, however, the variety show wasn’t fun enough to attract a huge number of viewers, leading to its ultimate cancellation.

The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale

Cancelled Netflix shows 144

Date cancelled: August 2018

The comedy series was cancelled after just one season. Though Netflix ordered six more episodes in addition to its original episode count of 13, sources told Deadline that the series didn’t draw enough viewership to secure a renewal.

The Ranch

Cancelled Netflix shows 145

Date cancelled: October 2018

The Ashton Kutcher-led sitcom was cancelled by Netflix after four seasons. When Netflix announced that the fourth season would be its last, Deadline reported that it was always the plan to finish the show with season 4. Kutcher also told TV Insider “Netflix owns the show, so it’s not like there was this big syndication boon that’s going to come if we shoot two more seasons.”

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Cancelled Netflix shows 146

Date cancelled: May 2018

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt wasn’t technically cancelled but came to its natural ending. After four seasons, series creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock decided to wrap up the story and go out on a high. “We came into the [fourth] season not necessarily thinking that way,” Carlock told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2018. “But in the past few months, we’ve been thinking [the series] is heading toward its conclusion.” Starring Ellie Kemper in the title role, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards during its entire run, including four nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series.
