The upcoming fifth season of The Last Kingdom will be its last. “We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for a fifth and final season on Netflix,” executive producer Nigel Merchant said in a statement. “With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”

The cancellation news shocked a lot of fans as the fifth and final season of the show will only cover the ninth and tenth books of Bernard Cornwell’s 13-part Saxon Stories series, leaving the final three installments unadapted. Unfortunately for fans, Netflix didn’t provide a reason for the cancellation.

Originally launched on BBC America in 2015 before moving to Netflix in 2018, The Last Kingdom centers on Dreymon’s Uhtred, a Saxon raised by Vikings who seeks to claim his ancestral birthright.
