The Right Stuff
Streaming Service: Disney+
No. of Season: 1
Disney+ canceled The Right Stuff last April after just one season. But series producer Warner Bros. TV was reportedly shopping the series around to other networks and streaming platforms. Originally a National Geographic show, Disney had acquired the historical drama for its streaming service. A person familiar with the cancellation told Variety that the axing of the series was not tied to the show’s performance but a redesign of NatGeo’s strategic focus. As of last April, two versions of the show were being shopped around, one that involves the current cast and another that focuses on the 1980s and features an all-new cast.
Loosely based on the 1979 book of the same name by Tom Wolfe and its 1983 film adaptation, The Right Stuff is a gritty, anti-nostalgic look at what would become America’s first reality show, as the obsessive original Mercury Seven astronauts and their families become instant celebrities in a competition that will either kill them or make them immortal. The eight-episode season 1 revolves around the stories of Major John Glenn (Patrick J. Adams) and Lieutenant Commander Alan Shephard (Jake McDorman).
